The Tale of the Three Brothers

25 Jul

So. Over the July 4th weekend I decided to embark on a new craft-like project. I’d always thought it would be cool to paint a chapter of a book on a wall, but never actually followed through with the vision. Untillllll I decided to ask my mom if she trusted me enough to paint the wall in the stairwell leading to the basement and she said YES. I started drawing lines on July 4th and two weeks later, I had successfully painted the entire chapter of The Tale of the Three Brothers from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on the wall, word for word. I completely guessed as to whether or not it would all fit, and miraculously it fit perfectly, all 20-something pages. I completely ruined my paintbrush, in the end, but I’d say it was worth it! I submitted this to craftgawker, my favorite website everrrr. You should totes check it out. If you wanna “favorite” my post go here. I’d love you forever, because nothing makes me happier than knowing that hundreds of complete strangers appreciate my work :)

you are awesome! I’m always solidly a potteraholic but I’ve been potter crazy the last couple weeks and just happen to be wearing a deathly hallows shirt as I type haha. the wall looks great!

Wow! I could never have pulled that off without whining and crying a little bit! If your paintbrush was the only fatality I would number this a big success!

I had a mini break down halfway through when I realized I forgot a few words but luckily I had time to fix it. Thanks!

That is fantastic! I’ve got a wall in my living room that needs to be painted why don’t you come over? I also did a Potter-theme decoration for my living room wall LOL. Half of Snapes face in pixels on a 2 x 4 feet canvas. You can see the tutorial here: http://essentialpepper.blogspot.com/2011/07/goodbye-severus-snape-youll-live-on-in.html

    • liz.kirkham 28. Jul, 2011 1:27 pm #

Thank you so much! Snape looks AWESOME. I’ve never tried something like that before… maybe this will be my new project :)

  21. Cecilia 28. Jul, 2011 11:50 am #

WOW it’s really awesome. Have you Tumblr?

  22. Tasha 28. Jul, 2011 12:12 pm #

This is fabulous! It looks like this is a cupboard under the stairs–how much more perfect can you get for a HP tribute?!
I am curious, what would you have done if this didn’t fill up the space?

    • liz.kirkham 28. Jul, 2011 1:25 pm #

If it didn’t fill up the space, I had planned to continue with the next chapter, but it turned out to be a tight fit!

  23. Brian J. Hill 28. Jul, 2011 5:00 pm #

That must’ve taken some commitment! You never cease to amaze me.

Hey I saw this on tumblr and I just wanted to say that this is fantastic and awesome :] you did an amazing job and I think I may now have to add to my to do list an attempt to paint a chapter of a book on a wall :]

  29. Rizalenio 13. Aug, 2011 7:38 am #

Fantastic. Nice chapter of the book you chose. Wanna do the same thing. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

I love HP and I love that story! Your work is creative, awesome, and beautiful!

  31. Daisy 03. Sep, 2011 6:01 pm #

That’s awesome! You have a lot of patience. I did notice that on the right-ish side, the word village was spelled with two i’s rather than two L’s. But it looks great besides!

    • Liz Kirkham 03. Sep, 2011 11:16 pm #

Thank you! I think it was just the flash from the camera haha although I must say you have a great eye for catching things because it does look like two i’s!

  32. jen 06. Sep, 2011 4:48 pm #

I went to that website & ‘liked’ it. It is a great idea kudos to you! I’ve always thought of doing something like this in a hallway using some of my favorite poetry. I’m going to use big frames & block it as a few pieces of artwork working together. Now it’s sealed.

    • Liz Kirkham 06. Sep, 2011 5:02 pm #

Thank you so much! That sounds fantastic – I’m sure it will look so great :)

  33. Michelle 10. Sep, 2011 2:12 pm #

  34. Audrey @ lonelypaperdesigns 19. Sep, 2011 6:04 pm #

    • Liz Kirkham 19. Sep, 2011 6:26 pm #

DO IT! It was so much fun and it makes you appreciate each and every word in a new way. Thanks so much! :)

  35. Geneve 24. Sep, 2011 4:51 am #

Love it. What type of paint did you use?

  36. Madison Thompson 02. Oct, 2011 9:37 pm #

Wait… Are you telling me you MEMORIZED all of this?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

    • Liz Kirkham 03. Oct, 2011 12:15 am #

Haha, my memory isn’t that impressive! I had the book open and in front of me the entire time (which explains why it’s now basically ruined, considering it’s covered in paint splatter!). :)

  37. Maria 11. Oct, 2011 8:05 am #

I love this! I would do something like that, if only I had the patience and talent. I have plenty of ideas, but I am never able do actually do them. I’d probably be too worried that it wouldn’t fit… Good work!

  38. Ms. Bright 11. Oct, 2011 8:42 am #

That is CRAZY…awesome. You have more patience than I ever will. Love it.

  39. Llyrianna 06. Nov, 2011 12:05 pm #

Thank you! I had a blast painting it, I hope your room turns out fabulously! I’m sure it will :)

  40. Meka 28. Nov, 2011 2:16 am #

This is very impressive and inspiring. I am now wondering what ‘The Prince’s Tale’ would look like emblazoned on the front of my house!! Are you available for private contracting? LOL Nice job!!

  41. Liz Kirkham 28. Nov, 2011 7:03 pm #

Thank you so much! I had a blast painting it (then again, I was unemployed and very easily amused haha). You should TOTALLY do The Prince’s Tale :)

  42. Jamie 02. Dec, 2011 12:29 pm #

what kind of paint brush did you use????? would it work with just a sharpie cause im really bad at writing with a paint brush. i defiantly want to do this though,

    • Liz Kirkham 24. Dec, 2011 1:59 pm #

A really tiny one. Haha. I’m sure it would work with a sharpie, you might just have to go over it a few times, depending on how dark the sharpie is. Good luck! :)

This is amazing. I love to read, and I’ve always wanted to somehow display my favourite chapters. I love HP, especially thelast book. THough, personally, I would’ve painted the chapter “the Prince’s Tale” because I’ve always been a Snape fan. Right back to the first book. Even still, You get THREE thumbs up on awesomeness. The Tale of the Three Brothers is a great chapter too

  50. cat 08. Feb, 2012 4:49 pm #

do you think a paint pen would work for this? I’m doing something similar in the entryway of my house.

    • Liz Kirkham 09. Feb, 2012 8:20 am #

      A permanent marker may work better… :-)

I am so impressed, this is wonderful! I hope J.K. Rowling has heard about this, she should be honored!

    That’s so cool! Awesome work = D

  55. Liz Kirkham 11. Apr, 2012 11:23 pm #

I used a can of really old black paint and a crummy paintbrush. Haha nothing special at all. It’s been almost a year and the wall is still in great shape, even in a high traffic area there hasn’t been any fading. :)
